9th Annual Justice for All Luncheon

Witness to Justice

50 YEARS LATER—LITTLE ROCK CENTRAL HIGH REMEMBERED

ELIZABETH ECKFORD  WITH KEN REINHARDT

“The ultimate measure of a person is not where they stand in moments of comfort and convenience, but where they stand in times of challenge and controversy.”

---Martin Luther King

Now and then we witness a historical event where ordinary individuals stand up against enormous odds, struggle for justice and win. When that happens, an otherwise insignificant act, such as attending the first day of school, can suddenly ignite the spirit of a nation.

Fifty years ago, Little Rock, AR became a battleground in the struggle for civil rights. On the morning of September 23, 1957, nine African-American teenagers—the Little Rock Nine—stood up to an angry crowd protesting integration of Little Rock’s Central High School. As they entered the school for the first time, these courageous young people made Little Rock the site of the first important test of the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decision.

Our featured speaker Elizabeth Eckford made history as a member of the Little Rock Nine. Joining her will be fellow classmate, Ken Reinhardt, one of the few white students to treat the black students with grace and respect. Photographer Will Counts’ image of 15-year-old Eckford, walking alone through a screaming mob in front of Central High School, propelled the crisis into the nation’s living rooms and brought international attention to Little Rock.

Join us as Ms. Eckford and Mr. Reinhardt come together to inspire hope for our future by bringing the not so distant past back into our consciousness.
