The Endowment of

Legal Aid of Western Missouri

Gifts to the Endowment are about protecting the future of Legal Aid and the clients and communities we serve.

“There has been no greater privilege in my life than helping vulnerable people get the legal assistance they desperately need. I want to make sure this vital work endures. This is why I have made a founding gift to the Legal Aid of Western Missouri Endowment and urge all who love justice to join me.”

    – C. Patrick McLarney

    About The Endowment

The Legal Aid of Western Missouri Endowment is a charitable fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. The Community Foundation offers a wide range of gifting options and vehicles to donate to the Legal Aid of Western Missouri Endowment. The Community Foundation and Legal Aid are recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as public charities. Consequently, donors are provided with the maximum tax benefits allowed by law.

The Legal Aid of Western Missouri Endowment is an outgrowth of the annual Justice for All Campaign. Annual gifts will continue to cover our current casework for our clients, but the Endowment offers an opportunity to establish a legacy of care, to help assure access to justice for future generations.

Investing in Justice through planned giving

A planned gift to the Legal Aid of Western Missouri Endowment demonstrates your belief in our mission and reinforces your commitment to make a difference in our community. Giving to the Endowment allows you to fulfill your charitable intentions and can result in immediate and future tax benefits for you under state and federal tax law.

Planned gifts can be as simple as adding the Legal Aid Endowment as a beneficiary of your 401(k) or IRA or as complex as creating a charitable trust in your will. Each gift offers special benefits. And each gift creates a long-term financial resource that helps sustain our community—from generation to generation.

With careful planning, it is possible to reduce or eliminate income taxes (including capital gains) and transfer taxes (including gift, estate, inheritance and generation-skipping). You might also enjoy tax savings while turning appreciated assets into an income for yourself and others. Planned giving is a tool that helps Legal Aid and enhances your financial plans and security.

    Ways to Give

Because many individuals today have large qualified retirement plans such as an IRA, 401(k) or Keogh plan, retirement plan gifts are one of the most popular ways to give. These assets have been growing tax-free for years. If the funds pass directly to an heir, they will be fully taxable to your heir. The plans are also included in the your taxable estate. Both taxes can be avoided by naming the Legal Aid of Western Missouri Endowment as a beneficiary of the plan proceeds.

Other ways to give include: a direct gift of money or appreciated assets; a life insurance gift; a bequest in a will or trust; a life income gift; and a charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder trust or charitable lead trust.

Please contact us for more information on these gift possibilities and to let us know if you have already included Legal Aid in your estate plans.
