Deputy Executive Director |
|
Position Summary
The Deputy Executive Director reports directly to the Executive Director and is a key
member of LAWMOs leadership team. The Deputy Executive Director works closely with
the Executive Director and the Board on for many key aspects of LAWMOs
administration, including strategic planning, staff oversight and personnel issues,
recruiting and developing collaborative partnerships with other organizations.
Status: Full-time, exempt position
Salary: Commensurate with experienceResponsibilities:
1. Working with the Executive Director and, perhaps, with third party
facilitators, leads the preparation of LAWMOs needs assessments and strategic
planning processes, and oversees the day-to-day implementation of the strategic plan;
2. Acts as liaison between all outlying offices and the central office,
and supervises the managing attorneys for all offices other than the central office;
3. Assists and takes a leadership role in developing collaborative
partnerships with other organizations that provide services to our clients;
4. Take a leadership role in the oversight of personnel management
issues and in recruiting staff for the organization;
5. Assists in planning and implementing fund raising, marketing and
public relations strategies;
6. Time permitting, maintains a significant case load;
7. Assists in developing and implementing a state legislative strategy;
8. Oversees CLE scheduling for staff attorneys;
9. Investigates and responds to client grievances;
10. Assists in compliance with Legal Services Corporation (LSC)
regulations; and,
11. Otherwise assists the Executive Director in any appropriate way.
Qualifications
- Must be a Missouri licensed attorney in good standing. Substantial experience in legal
services work or the equivalent preferred.
- A proven ability to lead and motivate staff.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Excellent collaborative skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.

LITC (Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic) Project
Licensed bilingual (Spanish) Attorney needed in Kansas City to serve as Outreach Educator/
Tax Controversy Attorney. This position will continue an extensive public awareness
campaign targeting the English as a Second Language (ESL) and Limited English Proficiency
(LEP) population of our 40 county service area to provide info/workshops about ITINs, W2
and Earned Income Tax Credits. Additional duties include but not limited to handling
relatively straightforward tax controversy cases, recruiting volunteer attorneys to handle
tax controversy cases and overseeing the implementation and enhancement of Legal
Aids policy for serving clients with Limited English Proficiency.
Starting salary $39,283 plus DOE. Generous benefit package provided.

Advocates for Family Health and Housing Plus Staff Attorney
Description: The attorney will work with Legal Aid of Western Missouris Advocates
for Family Health Project (AFH), a consumer advocacy project for participants in MO
HealthNets managed care programs that provide low-cost or no-cost healthcare for
children and families for half of the time, as well as work half time with the Housing
Plus team representing public and subsidized tenants facing eviction or subsidy
terminations.
Responsibilities: The attorney would assist the Director of AFH with all work associated
with the AFH project, such as:
- providing education and assistance to MO HealthNet Managed Care applicants and enrollees
who have questions or problems regarding their benefits and rights in order to gain their
full medical benefits;
- Representing members at administrative appeals;
- Conducting outreach regarding MO HealthNet Managed Care;
- Assist in the preparation of semi-annual reports and participate in mandatory meetings.
This attorney will also handle housing cases for the Housing Plus Team,
responsibilities will include individual representation, such as:
- Representing families and individuals in administrative proceedings with local Housing
Authorities and private HUD-Assisted Developments, as well as court eviction proceedings;
- Collaborating with other attorneys on litigation strategy relevant to the housing area;
- Representing residents at administrative appeals and appeals from the trial court;
- Meeting with Resident organizations.
This project covers the counties of: Benton, Camden, Cass, Clay, Henry, Jackson,
Johnson, Lafayette, Morgan, Pettis, Platte, Ray, Saline and St. Clair. Attorneys AFH
work will be supervised and housed from the Legal Aid of Western Missouris Central
office located at 1125 Grand, Suite 1900, Kansas City, Missouri, 64106.
Qualifications: A law degree, member of the Missouri Bar, excellent written and oral
communication skills, and a desire and commitment to assist in the delivery of high
quality legal assistance to low income people. Experience in Housing, Administrative Law,
and Missouri Associate Circuit Court civil practice is a plus. Fluency in Spanish and
experience in working with the Hispanic community is preferred. Local travel in the
counties listed above is required. Flexibility and the ability to work independently and
as a member of a team are necessary.
